I have absolute faith that all people can find their lives forever improved as a result of a regular yoga practice. It brings me great joy to share in other practitioners’ yoga journeys, offering as much guidance and assistance as I can.
I took my first yoga class over 20 years ago, but didn’t truly “get it” until I started practicing on a regular basis in 2007. That’s when I realized that I had found a place where I would always belong—within myself, where I felt complete joy and peace, and where I could recharge from the hectic pace and chaos of everyday life.
In 2009, I earned my 200-hour certification from the Infinite Light Yoga School and also became an RYT-200 through Yoga Alliance. After graduating, I became a member of the ILY Teachers Association, and I have been teaching classes through ILY ever since. In addition, I enjoyed planning and leading several workshops, helped to mentor new teachers and facilitated practice teaching sessions at the ILY School, and volunteered my time to share yoga with children and at-risk teens in the community. I attend many trainings and retreats to continuously learn more about this practice, and I lead workshops at the Finger Lakes Yoga Festival and its sister events throughout the Central New York region during the year. In addition, I am an adjunct yoga instructor at Onondaga Community College.
Through my classes, I hope to convey that the practice of yoga is available and accessible for every person and every body. In addition to countless health benefits, it is a wonderful gateway to self-discovery, inner peace and joy, as well as creativity and productivity. The practice of yoga enhances all other areas of life, and I am excited to share my knowledge and love of the practice.
I offer a class based on the principles of classical yoga. I will guide you through centering, pranayama (breathing), warm-ups, a brief vinyasa (flow of postures linked with breath), asanas (postures), and relaxation, encouraging you to find your “edge,” working at your own level and honoring your body in its current state of health. It’s my hope that you will not feel intimidated by yoga and that you will give it a try regardless of your age and fitness level. You have nothing to lose and so much to gain.
In early 2011, I was teaching at a yoga weekend in Rochester and tried a hooping (think hula-hoop circa 1950) workshop. I enjoyed it so much, I signed up for Hoopnotica training, and I am now a certified Hoopnotica instructor. Hooping is a great workout and also incredibly FUN! Come try one of my hooping classes! You’ll smile and laugh through the whole class, but you’ll burn 400-600 calories in the process! I find hooping a wonderful complement to my yoga practice.
Namaste,
Dena
